Police Warning After 3.a.m. Cross-Severn Swim

South Worcestershire Police today (10th June) urged and advised the public not to try and emulate a man who swam - possibly naked and in response to a bet - across the River Severn in Worcester at approximately 3am on 8th June.

West Mercia Police Cap BadgePassers-by saw him complete the crossing - starting from the Hylton Road bank near the Sabrina Bridge - before being driven off in a small silver family saloon, the same size as Renault Clio but with rear lights resembling a Fiat Punto.

The man is believed by one passer-by to have made the swim in response to a bet/ challenge from the driver when the car was on the Hylton Road bank, before being driven across the main road to pick up the swimmer on the opposite side.

“Both men are believed to have been intoxicated and both have acted extremely irresponsibly, putting one of them at great personal risk in the cold water and dangerously strong under-currents and both of them and members of the public - as the driver’s judgment will almost certainly have been impaired,” said Ch. Insp. Sharon Gibbons, head of operational policing in South Worcestershire.

"Drunk, or sober, and at any time of day or night, the River Severn is never the place to go for an impromptu swim. We strongly urge anyone considering it not to do so and not to encourage, persuade, bully or challenge anyone else to do so. The consequences next time could well be tragic."

Officers want to speak to both men and urge them to come forward. Additionally, anyone who believes that they know them - the swimmer is believed to be white, aged around 20, 6ft-6ft 2ins tall, with dark hair and the driver also white, aged around 20 and with brown hair - should contact police on 0300 333 3000, quoting 50S/080610. Information can also be given, anonymously, to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

West Midlands Search and Rescue are to feature on the Discovery Channel's 'The Water Boatman'.

"Presenter, Alan Herd, explores the inland waterways of Britain, following the Stourport Ring – the canal route that covers 65 miles of canals and 13 miles of the River Severn. He experiences some varied watercraft and visits some of the most fascinating parts of our heritage. Across the series, Alan will visit Birmingham, the city with more canals than Venice, known as the ‘workshop of the world’ during the Industrial Revolution. The journey continues on past the birthplace of Cadbury chocolate, onto the cathedral city of Worcester and past the Severn valley steam railway. Along the way, Alan hitches lifts with other canal enthusiasts and discovers more about life afloat."

Watch this space, we hope to have it available for our visitors soon.

Volunteers Honoured by Ambulance Service

An awards ceremony has honoured people from Worcestershire and Herefordshire who have gone beyond the call of duty to help save lives.

The West Midlands Ambulance Service held the ceremony earlier this month to recognise the efforts of almost 200 volunteers, including community first responders, drivers and members of the British Red Cross and St John Ambulance. West Midlands Ambulance Service chief executive Anthony Marsh described the award winners as “the best in the West Midlands and the best in our country”.

Among those honoured were a number of our team members:

Howard Painter - Special Acheivement

Howard Painter has been volunteering for about 12 months, as well as being part of the West Midlands Search and Rescue team. His chartered accountancy business provides a free service to the Herefordshire and Worcestershire CFR Charity. His firm carries out an independent audit before submitting it to the Charity Commission.

Ben Allen and Richard Bailey - Chief Officer's Commendation

Mr Allen and Mr Bailey both volunteer their time as Worcestershire community first responders, as well as playing their part in the West Midlands Search and Rescue team.
During the recent bad weather they made themselves available to both services in 4x4 vehicles, responding to 999 calls and coming to the aid of stranded vehicles.
At short notice they even responded to an Emergency Operations Centre request to help ferry staff to and from work to keep the centre running smoothly.
They are always willing to drop everything to help and for their support and commitment they have received the chief officer’s commendation.
